About the Event

The Legends Archive was created to recognize those people of our own era that we feel have shaped the LGBTQ+ community that we live in. The Legends of the past like Sylvester, Harvey Milk, and Divine have paved the way for us, and now it is time to hold up the Legends that we continue to create in this dynamic epicenter that is San Francisco.

Each year, The Academy selects one individual who has truly become a Legend, worthy of being remembered in the historical archive. They are invited to donate a personal artifact to represent themselves and their contribution to the community to be put on permanent display.

The 2021 Legends Awards, honoring Dr. Tim Seelig, will be hosted by Sister Roma, Donna Sachet, and Liam Mayclem, and featuring appearances by Terrance Kelly, The Oakland interfaith Gospel Choir, Melanie DeMore, and Linda Stonestreet. Each award is presented by a distinguished member of the community in an award gala format and we close out the evening with a cocktail reception at The Academy Social Club featuring Juanita MORE! on the decks. The evening offers the opportunity to bring together the various elements of our wild LGBTQ+ family, and supports the archive.

As part of the celebration, we also award several prestigious Community awards:

The Architect Award: Awarded to people who are instrumental in creating something new that adds to the overall LGBTQ+ community.

The Exemplar Award: Awarded not just because of what they have done, but because they inspire others to do better, and be better versions of themselves.

Diane Jones Solidarity Award: Awarded to those that are instrumental in bridging divides between one or more demographic groups within the LGBTQ+ community.
